Nov 28, 2023 | Ecuador | 0 comments

Have you ever dreamed of spending time on a tropical island far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life? If so, consider exploring Floreana Island in the Galapagos archipelago! With its spectacular landscapes, unique wildlife species, and mysterious secrets waiting to be unearthed, Floreana Island is sure to be an unforgettable adventure. From snorkeling with sea lions to trekking up dormant volcanos, there’s something here for everyone who loves travel and underwater exploration – so what are you waiting for? Grab your scuba gear and prepare yourself for an exciting journey beneath the waves as I help uncover all the hidden surprises that await you on this magical island.

Floreana was the place I’d been dying to visit. Did you know that this amazing southern island is one of the lucky four in the Galápagos Archipelago with residents? With an area of 67 sq mi, it’s just waiting to be explored and enjoyed. It’s where the first-ever “post office” was set up by whalers, and it also happens to be the home of the very first Galapagos resident. Fun fact: Floreana holds the title of being the very first island to be colonized by Ecuadorians in 1832.

If you’re itching to head over to the Galapagos Islands, you absolutely have to check out these awesome blog posts first. They’re packed with all the juicy details you need.

San Cristobal Island – A Paradise in the Galapagos Islands

Can you stay on Floreana Island in the Galapagos?

Floreana day tours, although a long 2-hour boat ride, operate from Santa Cruz island. But here’s a better idea: why not stay on a cruise ship and indulge in a 5-star experience? If that’s not your thing, you can stay on the charmingly tiny island at The Red Mangrove Inn, it’s like a settlement with only a handful of people. And hey, there’s also the original hotel El Pajas and the Black Beach House. You’ve got options, but just so you know, they have a cozy cabin-in-the-woods feel (hint hint), not exactly a 5-star hotel. Only 150 lucky souls get to call this island home and let me tell you, getting phone service there is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Good luck with that.

Post Office Bay on Floreana Island

Life’s simple pleasures are the ones that bring us the most joy, and the Galapagos islands are a haven for incredible wildlife and marine creatures. But let me tell you about the really cool part: the Post Office Bay! Back in 1793, a bunch of whalers set up a wooden barrel and called it a post office. Imagine that – a post office in the middle of the ocean! Sailors would leave their letters in the barrel, hoping that the next sailor who found it would be heading towards their letter’s destination and could deliver it. Fast forward to today, and visitors leave their own postcards, eagerly sifting through the stack to find one they can hand-deliver. It’s like a treasure hunt! So next time you’re in the Galapagos, don’t forget to stop by the Post Office Bay and see if you can be a part of this awesome tradition.

The craziest part is, that I received my letter back in less than a week after coming back from my trip. How awesome is that?

Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island

Follow an easy trail to a stunning brackish lagoon, where you’ll encounter a diverse range of fascinating creatures. Get ready to spot Bahama ducks, common stilts, Galápagos flycatchers, yellow warblers, and the majestic Galapagos flamingos. To blend in with nature, opt for nude, white, and black attire. Just be careful of the mischievous wasps – they’re drawn to bright colors and might try to tag along on your fun-filled journey if you are not wearing a neutral color. The trail ends at a beautiful beach where you can spot adorable green sea turtles laying their eggs on the powdery sand dunes (December- May) and playful sting rays gracefully swimming in the shallow water. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss!

Devil’s Crown in Galapagos

After the hike, step into the crown and discover an underwater paradise brimming with vibrant coral reefs and a lively cast of marine creatures. Say hello to playful sea lions, dance with colorful fish, chill with white-tipped sharks, glide alongside eagle rays, and high-five hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles.

Baroness Point

It’s a unique basaltic tuff formation nestled in the northern end of Floreana Island, right in La Olla Bay. You’ll find it between Cormorant Point and Post Office Bay. It’s definitely worth a visit! The rocky remains of the volcano offer a spot for seabird hangouts. You’ll find blue-footed boobies, and pelicans rocking their nests in the crevices. We took a zodiac ride near Baroness Point which is all about the thrilling quest for sea turtles, rays, and even blacktip sharks. Guess what? We stumbled upon several adorable baby blacktip sharks. It was a total blast that left us beaming with joy and excitement!

So if you plan a trip to Floreana Island in the Galapagos Islands, you won’t be disappointed. You can marvel at the beauty of nature while you witness blacktip sharks gracefully swimming through the ocean, spot sea turtles darting across the waters, and gape in awe as blue-footed boobies soar through the sky. Not to mention seeing those fuzzy little sea lions sunbathing on the shoreline. What more could you ask for? Seeing all of this incredible wildlife is what life in Floreana is all about. Who knows, that same spirit of adventure might call your name and take you on an unanticipated adventure as well! Regardless, I hope that my blog has enlightened and inspired you – so much so that hopefully one day soon you will make this journey yourself! Let me know if I am missing anything in the comments, or if I did not cover something thoroughly enough – I’m here and happy to help!
