If you’re looking for an escape to paradise, Kona Kai Resort & Spa in San Diego is the place for you. As a busy mom of three on the go, I was desperate for some rest and relaxation – and trust me, there was no shortage of either at Kona Kai. From the moment I stepped into the beautiful resort with its breathtaking views of San Diego Bay, to my final farewells from its friendly staff, every second felt like an island vacation. In this blog post, I’m spilling all my secrets so you can have the perfect ‘me-time’ vacay you deserve.

Rooms at Kona Kai Resort & Spa
The rooms at Kona Kai Resort & Spa are decent enough, but I wish I had opted for something more. Waking up each morning to the view of an uninspiring parking lot just wasn’t doing it for me – my dreams were set on capturing those stunning vistas overlooking the harbor. If I could go back in time, I 100% would have selected a room with a water view. Please do not make the same mistake as I did. Click here to book your stay This link will take you directly to the hotel.
You can give your kids an unforgettable night with a luxurious in-room tent along with some sweet treats. All this while the adults enjoy champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries partaking in the ultimate indulgence. Contact the hotel for more information.
Also, this hotel welcomes “man’s best friend”. So you can bring along your furry pal during the next stay.
The bathroom holds a sweet surprise, with the coconut body wash- so yummy you’ll be tempted to take some home.
Resort and Parking Fee
If you’re planning a vacation here, be aware that the parking and resort fees at this resort can really add up – it could easily set you back more than expected. Plan ahead so there are no surprises.
Private Beach and Pool Cabana
Whether you’re looking to relax or splash around with the kids, the resort offers two incredible pools. The adult-only pool is a tranquil oasis perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. And who says vacations are just for grownups? Get ready for some summer fun – there’s also an action-packed kid’s pool complete with music and beach vibes.
After a long and cold Texas autumn, nothing could have been more refreshing than plunging into the inviting waters of this resort-style California swimming pool in November. What an incredible feeling to enjoy the warmth while taking a dip. It was nice relaxing in the sun while seeing my friends back home trying to survive in 40-degree weather in Texas. Burr…..
Just a heads up the swimming pool was not heated.
Even though California is known for its beautiful beaches, the water is always way too chilly for me. I enjoy my beach water warm like bath water. So I usually always just enjoy the California beach from afar. You will find that the majority of the guests are hanging out at the pool in November, not at the beach.
If you are not planning to stay the night then you can rent a day pass by clicking here.
Rentals
You can rent the following equipment:
WaveRunners
Powerboats
Kayaks
SUP
Bikes- Complementary
I suggest experiencing San Diego in a unique and fun way by renting bikes to bike around the stunning harbor. It’s an unforgettable adventure that all families should try at least once. The area around the resort is stunning.

Dining at Kona Kai Resort
Having breakfast by the bay is a must. I was absolutely blown away by the restaurant’s beauty, and the breakfast that I had there was out of this world – not to mention those picturesque views of the bay. The perfect way to start your day.

Smores
Every night at 7:30 pm, the resort guests gather around a roaring fire to roast marshmallows for classic smores. Enjoyed by all, it is an evening ritual that brings everyone together. Also, the best part is it’s free!
Unfortunately, the time change threw us for a loop and we didn’t make it for sweet s’mores around the campfire. I guess 9:30 pm our time is just too late for us.

Gym on the Bay
I’ve been to a lot of resorts, and I must say that this one takes the cake with its top-notch gym. It’s always a treat to Crossfit with the right equipment – and this gym had it all. It certainly earned some major points in my book. Did I mention you can enjoy views of the bay while you work out?
I suggest showing up early because the gym can get crowded later in the day.
Another thing I loved about the gym was the free sauna and steam room. I went every day and no appointment was needed.

Travel Tip: Fill up your water bottles in the fitness center before you go out and explore. It’s free filtered water.
