Nov 18, 2023 | Ecuador | 0 comments

Look no further than San Cristobal Island, in the Galapagos Islands. With its stunning natural beauty and wide array of wildlife, it’s more than an ordinary tropical island getaway – a once-in-a-lifetime experience waiting to be explored. From snorkeling with seals to watching blue-footed boobies fly around, there is always something new and exciting to discover on this exotic journey. So plan your trip now and let yourself soak up the sun while taking part in unforgettable activities – from hiking lush trails full of unique flora and fauna to exploring fascinating geological formations along coastlines. Experience all that San Cristobal has to offer.

In July, I embarked on an epic adventure to cruise the magnificent Galapagos Islands! Our first stop was the incredible San Cristobal Island – talk about an adrenaline rush. I still can’t believe it all happened! Stay tuned for more incredible tales from this island paradise!

San Cristóbal, the fifth-largest island in the archipelago, is full of endless wonders. The town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal is the capital of the Galápagos province. Here you’ll find government offices, an Ecuadorian Navy facility, and an airport with daily flights to the mainland. With 6,000 people, it’s not just about the Galápagos wildlife – it is home to the second largest human population in Galápagos, right after Santa Cruz. This island is actually the oldest permanent settlement of the Galapagos. And guess who stepped foot on this very same island back in 1835? Charles Darwin himself!

I suggest you start here with this blog post An Insider’s Guide to Cruising the Galápagos in Luxury. (Click here) .

Flights to Galápagos (San Cristobal)

This island is where you’ll find the airport and cool hotels. Unlike most Galapagos Islands, you can actually stay on this island for an unforgettable experience.

Is the Tour Guide Required for San Cristobal Island?

You don’t need a tour guide for this awesome island. San Cristóbal, the fifth-largest island in the archipelago, is full of endless wonders.

San Cristobal Island Tour Guides

While embarking on your hike, prepare to be blown away by their incredible tour guides! These knowledgeable folks will shower you with fascinating facts about the wildlife you encounter along the way. Brace yourself for an overload of information, but trust me, it’s the most exhilarating feeling in the world to soak up so much knowledge!

How many days do you need at San Cristobal Island?

You’ll need a solid 2 to 3 days to soak up all its wonders.

Cerro Brujo (Witch Hill)

One of the absolute must-do activities in San Cristobal Island is Cerro Brujo. Don’t miss out on the chance to soak up the beauty of Cerro Brujo, a mesmerizing white coral beach that offers sweeping views and fantastic birdwatching opportunities. Take a serene stroll along the beach, go for a swim with the playful sea lions, or take out the kayaks or stand-up paddle boards for some extra thrills and excitement. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

One of the very first wildlife encounters on the island was with the incredible Galapagos Marine Iguana! These magnificent creatures, with their striking appearance and dark color, have a super cool feeding habit. They actually dive underwater, going as deep as 15 meters (50 feet), to munch on algae-covered rocks! Now, that’s what I call a unique dining experience!

Punta Pitt

Punta Pitt is an incredible spot and is home to a group of volcanic cones. It’s a haven for bird watchers! You’ll be delighted to witness not one, not two, but three species of boobies – blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies. But wait, there’s more! You’ll also spot species of frigate birds, swallow-tailed gulls, storm petrels, shearwaters, and brown pelicans. You’ll also spot two species of frigate birds. So, if you’re visiting the Galapagos and wondering what to do on San Cristobal Island, don’t miss out on a trip to Punta Pitt. Prepare for a 2 km hike, lasting approximately 3 hours, to reach the nest of those adorable blue-footed boobies.

While I was on this incredible trip, my husband stayed back at home, and guess what he missed? The magnificent blue-footed boobie! It’s one of his absolute favorite birds, and he’s eagerly waiting to spot one himself. And let me tell you, on San Cristobal Island, you’ll see many of these fascinating creatures. The craziest part? They don’t even fly away! They let you get up close and personal with them as if they’re absolutely unimpressed by your presence. Pretty cool, right?

Interpretation Center on San Cristobal

The Interpretation Center on San Cristobal is an amazing information hub that taught me oodles about the Galapagos themselves and the wonderful wildlife they house! The tour offered by the Center for Interpretation’s facilities takes us on a fascinating journey through the islands’ history, highlighting the beautiful harmony between nature, humankind, and conservation. The informative displays in both English and Spanish are an added bonus! And guess what? This awesome activity is absolutely free!

Shopping in San Cristobal Island

You wouldn’t believe the souvenirs and T-shirts I stumbled upon, including some seriously cool brands that I hadn’t even heard of before. Let me tell you, those long socks with blue-footed boobies on them were a total hit! The only hiccup was the sizing. As someone who usually wears a small, and sometimes extra small, I found myself sporting a large in the Galapagos. And let me tell you, it was quite the adventure trying to find a shirt for my mother-in-law, who typically wears a large. I ended up having to go for an XXL, equivalent to an American large. Unfortunately, I don’t think my mother-in-law was too pleased with the sizing either.

Hammerhead Sharks

Ready to check off “diving with Hammerhead sharks” from your bucket list? Look no further than Kicker Rock, one of the top dive sites in the Galapagos! Don’t miss out, book your ultimate underwater adventure on this incredible island while you are out shopping.

The Cathedral in Galapagos

If you’re on a Galapagos cruise, get ready for an unforgettable adventure. As the day winds down, you will hop on a zodiac for a thrilling ride through the magnificent cave known as The Cathedral. We were wowed by the stunning sights and vibrant wildlife, like the curious crabs and playful sea lions. Picture this: while sitting on the zodiac, sea lions swim beside you, adding extra excitement as you explore the cave. It’s the absolute perfect way to end a perfect day in paradise!
