Santorini, Greece is one of the ultimate getaway destinations for this number-one reason… breathtaking views! It offers many romantic settings and stunning scenery that will take your breath away with each turn. So when my best friend of 24 years asked me to come along with her, I couldn’t say no. One of the best decisions I have made in 2022.
When is the best time to visit Santorini, Greece?
Some of the best times to visit Santorini are from March through June and September through October. You can enjoy the warm sunny weather from March through June. September and October are the months with hardly any crowds at all, but can be on the chilly side for a Texan like me.
Cash
The currency for Greece is the euro. Try to find an ATM that will allow you to take out Euros for a low fee. The airport is not the place to get euros. The fees can be very expensive and it’s best if you avoid them altogether by getting your currency at a hotel or other establishment, such as your personal bank.
How many days is enough for Santorini, Greece?
If you want to relax for 5 days, then this is the perfect place. For those who enjoy exploring and finding new things in their visited destinations – two days should be more than enough time in Santorini.
If you have extra time in Greece check out these blogs:
Airport
We flew into Santorini Airport (JTR), which is about one hour flight from Athens. Once you land, the cheapest way to get to your hotel is by standing in the cab line. The cab line is usually long and it can take a while, so make sure you’re prepared for the wait. If you want faster service, I suggest using an Uber, but that will cost you some extra dough. Weigh your options after you see the lines.
Where to stay on the island of Santorini
Experience the unique Afroessa Hotel by Pearl Hotel Collection in Santorini, Greece. This boutique hotel offers stunning views. The room may not seem like much, but when you get up close and take a look at that view from your door, it’s absolutely breathtaking! This hotel is for grown-ups only – no kids allowed.
Check out this video I uploaded:
You have so many options when it comes to where you can stay. If money is tight, this place might be perfect for your budget. In September, this room ran around $200 a night in Imerovigli. Check out their website here. The best area to stay in Santorini is Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. A majority of the celebrities and Instagram pictures are taken in Oia. The Kardashians stayed at the Celestia Grand in Fira, while others stay on private yachts which you will see all over Oia.
Food at Afroessa Hotel
The food at the hotel restaurant is wonderful and you can enjoy a meal while taking in all the stunning views. Considering there is only one restaurant on-site and it’s small I was hoping the food would be at least eatable but I was pleasantly surprised when I actually enjoyed it. If you are staying at this hotel I highly suggest you try it.

How to get around Santorini
Parking is a limiting factor in Santorini and in some cases impossible. I highly recommend using an Uber, moped, or ATV to get around town. While some bloggers suggest renting a car to explore the island, I believe that’s not such an option for first-time visitors. The streets are narrow and confusing in certain areas which could make driving hazardous if you’re unfamiliar with how things work there – let alone just trying to figure out where everything is located.
Do the people on the island speak English?
The people on this island speak English almost everywhere you go, even though the language is Greek. It’s a tourist destination so most who work there are from other parts of Greece and know how to communicate with outsiders in their native tongue.
Cruise Ships
The island is a popular spot with tourists during the high season. Over 80 thousand visitors come there every day and there are up to five cruise ships that arrive in one morning. When a cruise ship docks in Fira, most passengers seem to stay close by that port. Hint hint
Not wheelchair accessible
This is going to be one of the most difficult islands for wheelchairs. It’s not accessible at all, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone handicapped. You should stay on the cruise ship or pick another island to explore.
Famous “flying” dress pictures
When I saw these pictures, the first thing that came to mind was a bucket list item. The women in them look like goddesses and they are standing beside one of Greece’s most famous landmarks-Santorini’s blue dome, with its incredible views over the island country. If you have time to do it, then 100% do it! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Things to do in Santorini
Visit the churches
Why not take the opportunity while you are here to visit some of these incredible churches that line this street. Click here for a list.

Shopping in Santorini
Go shopping in Fira and Oia. Fira is a bustling port where ships drop off tourists. This area has many flea market-style stores and souvenirs. Oia is where you will find high-end designer clothes at their many boutiques. You can find some cute affordable clothes at Kamari Beach. Bring some comfortable shoes so you can shop till you drop.

Explore the Santorini Island
I recommend you rent an ATV and explore the magical island of Santorini. You will see ATVs everywhere. I was itching to rent an ATV and explore, but sadly I ran out of time. If only I could go back in time and do this first, before anything else I would!
Eat Gelato
The Gelato in Santorini is different than most places. It comes with a fun yummy cone and different unique toppings. I’ve been all over Greece and this island does Gelato differently and I think I like it.

Where to eat in Santorini
Taverna Saliveros on Kamari Beach
The best thing about this restaurant is that they have delicious food, and it’s on the beach. Plus you get free shots for coming here – what more could anyone ask for?

Five Senses at Astra Suites
The food here is to die for, but it will cost you. You get 3 courses and each one tastes amazing! Get ready to eat one of the best meals of your life. The portions may look small, but I promise you will be full by the end of your meal. You need to make reservations in advance if you plan to dine at this restaurant.

White Lounge
White Lounge in Santorini is an intimate spot to catch up with friends over drinks and appetizers. The breathtaking views from this restaurant are an absolute must-see and it was just a few steps from our hotel.
