Guess what! Did you know that you can have a tropical island vacation right here in Texas! There is no need to break the bank on an expensive getaway, when an island awaits you right here in Texas. Son’s Island is a tropical paradise located on an actual island, surrounded by Lake Placid. Who knew the island life could be right here in our own backyard. Here is everything you need to know about Son’s Island.

I have partnered with Son’s Island for this post. The best part for me is they had zero restrictions when it came to my blog post. This is all my honest opinion, with no constraints.

Book your vacation
Check online for availability here. You will need to book your cabana rentals and tents before your stay, due to limited availability. This place is popular and all of the great spots go fast!
Insider Tip: Print receipt and sign waiver before check-in.
Check-In
Upon arrival at Son’s Island, an employee will ask for your receipt and waivers. Once your paperwork is received, the staff will point you in the direction of the wooden bridge, which is your access to your island oasis.
Insider Tip: Before the bridge, you will see this eclectic sign, which is an ideal spot to get a Facebook or Instagram picture.

Day and Night Cabana Rentals
In order to get on the island, you must rent a cabana or tent. There are only forty cabanas available for rent on the 3.5 acres island, which gives you the sense of being on an exclusive and private island. The rental includes free entry for up to eight people, but you can have up to fifteen people in the cabana at $10 to $34 per person, depending on the season.
Day
10:30 am – 6:30 pm
Night
7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Once on the island, you can head out to your own private cabana to drop off your belonging. Afterwards, you will head back to the parking lot to park your car.
This is where the fun begins! You and your family and friends can escape and leave the world behind with your own private Texas-Hawaiian cabana…Texawaiian! Doesn’t that sound fun?!

Insider Tip: Bring your own boat and wave runners for extra fun in the sun. The island offers free docking. Also, there is public boat ramp located one mile down the lake.
The cabanas are stocked with a barbecue pit, picnic tables, hammock, chairs, tables, electric outlets, fan, lights and a private dock.

Insider Tip: I suggest renting an “A” cabana. You will thank me later!
Everyone has access to the water from their cabana via their own private dock.

When you need a break from swimming, you can hang out in these adorable, hammocks, under the shade in your cabana.

What to Pack for the Cabanas
Swimsuits
Towels
Life-vests for kids
Water shoes
Food
Cooler
Drinks
Sunscreen
Mosquito Spray
Radio
No Glass Allowed
Insider Tip: Bring your own inflatables to floating around the lake. There is no current, so you do not have to worry about the kids floating off.
Glamping
Want to experience a camping experience…without all of the work?
Son’s Island offers all inclusive, overnight tent camping rentals. It sleeps up to four people from the hours of 7:30 pm – 10:00 am.
Includes: Fully built 14′ x 10′ tent, two memory foam mattresses, two cots, a light for the tent, and the two, most sensational AC fans. It was so cold in our tent, I had to wake up in the middle of the night to turn it off. I was freezing!
Important Message – If you only rent a tent, then you are not allowed on the island until 7:30 pm and it does not include a cabana. The tent is just for sleeping and does not include the lake. If you want to experience the lake, you need to rent a cabana.

Insider Tip: You can pick your own tent. If you like to party, I suggest that you stay by the band area. If you want rest and relax, stay closer to the water. We selected a tent in a quiet area by our cabana.
What to Pack:
2 Queen Sheets
Pillows
2 Blankets
Instant Coffee or Coffee Maker
Insider Tip: To experience all of Son’s Island, I suggest renting a day cabana, then renting a tent for the one night. Also, add another cabana rental for the following day. That gives you two full days on the lake.
Restrooms and Showers
The air conditioned restrooms and showers are shared among the community. They are the cleanest most fanciest restrooms that I have ever come across. The best part… I NEVER saw a line, nor did I ever see anyone waiting to use the facility.

What To Do on Son’s Island:
Swim on the lake
We spent the entire day just swimming in the lake while listening to music. The kids LOVED it.

Insider Tip: Do not worry, the lake does not have alligators. Believe me, I researched it online and even asked around. However, there are snakes and spiders. Hello welcome to lake life and nature! All lakes have snakes and spiders.
Relax
This was my favorite part, just sitting back and relaxing, under a shaded cabana, while the kids played.

Watercraft Rentals
You can rent kayaks, paddle boards and floats. Life vests come with the rentals and you are required to wear them.
We had a blast circling the island on kayaks, looking for wildlife. We found a large branch in the water covered with over fifty turtles. We named it Turtle Island.

Insider Tip: I suggest you rent the water crafts ahead of time so the items are at your cabana when you arrive.
Rope Swing and Frog Water Slide
If you have kids who are adventurers like mine, this is the place to be. We spent several hours at the water slide and my son was still disappointed when when it was time to head back to our cabana. There is a life guard in this section of the island. If a life guard is not present, you are not permitted on the water slide.

Outside Games
You will never run out of things to do on the island. After a long day on the water, you can head over to the large grassy area full of fun games for all ages. You can play volleyball, checkers, and cornhole for no additional fee. On the weekends, they even provide a live band during the warmer months.

Ducks
We enjoyed feeding these friendly Son’s Island ducks. Keep in mind, there are many healthier alternatives to offer instead of bread such as grapes, corn, birdseed, or other grains.
